Project 1: CHEM- The Original Survivor

Project 1: The Original Survivor

For your first project, you will create a product to enhance a reader’s understanding of Lord of the Flies

This can take many directions. It could be a new way to look at allegory.  It could be a new way to look at one of the themes in the book.  It could be an analysis of one of the characters, or an application of that character’s development in a new context.  It could be a re-examination of one portion of the book.  Do something that excites YOU.

Your project must show an in depth understanding of the novel and go beyond a summary of the plot.  In addition to the language arts standards, you will be graded on your execution and professionalism, including your technology skills.

Be Creative! Have Fun!

Think like a literary scholar who wants to make money!

You need to address the following Language Arts AKS in detail, either in your project or in your project’s explanation:

1.      1. cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text

You need to specifically address one of the following Reading Literature AKS in detail:

2.       2. determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze in detail its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an objective summary of the text

3.     3.  analyze how complex characters (e.g., those with multiple or conflicting motivations) develop over the course of a text, interact with other characters, and advance the plot or develop the theme

5.       4. analyze how an author’s choices concerning how to structure a text, order events within it (e.g., parallel plots), and manipulate time (e.g., pacing, flashbacks) create such effects as mystery, tension, or surprise

6.      5.  analyze a particular point of view or cultural experience reflected in a work of literature from outside the United States, drawing on a wide reading of world literature

You need to adhere to the following Writing and Language AKS:

37.    demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing

                37c) spell correctly

                37d) produce legible work

38. apply knowledge of language to understand how language functions in different contexts, to make effective choices for meaning or style, and to comprehend more fully when reading or listening

38a) write and edit work so that it conforms to the guidelines in a style manual (e.g., MLA Handbook, Turabian’s Manual for Writers) appropriate for the discipline and writing type

Use this to demonstrate some of your Technology AKS:

This is the year you will begin to specialize in a technology.  How can you apply this to this LOTF project?  You can create so many things within your technology, or you can combine technologies with others.  First come up with ideas using your Tech, then take a look at those AKS to see what you might address.  Each student will be addressing different AKS for their respective Tech, so clarify with Mr. Reilly as you go.

Pieces and due dates:

Team Site Created            Wednesday, August 21

Check out this Demo site for a planning example  After you create your site, share it with team members, make it Public, and then email a link to nkirchner and mreilly with the email subject "Chem Project 1 2013".  You do not have to use a Google Site, but you must have a site that all of your team can edit/share, and hold the same information as the example.

All of the following items should be located on your planning site, clearly identified as "Plan", "Reflection".  Your Final Project may or may not be on a site, we will explain that delivery closer to the date.

Preliminary plan                Thursday, August 22

Revised Plan--includes a detailed script/story board/ animation plan with page citations
